OTTAWA, Ontario -- For a team playing its third game in four nights, the Minnesota Wild looked plenty fresh on Sunday night -- even in overtime.Matt Dumba scored late in the extra session and Darcy Kuemper stopped 35 shots, helping Minnesota beat the Ottawa Senators 2-1.The Wild were coming off a 3-2 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday after beating Pittsburgh on Thursday. Its not the end of the world to play back-to-backs, and I thought we held on and did a good job, Wild coach Bruce Boudreau said.Ryan Suter scored a short-handed goal in the first period and Kuemper helped the Wild kill off three early power plays. Were not a team that wants to get behind 3-0, so getting those three kills and getting out of the first period with a lead was really important for us Id say, Boudreau said.Craig Anderson made 40 saves and was again solid for the Senators, who got a goal from Kyle Turris 5:06 into the third period. Ottawa has 11 goals over its last eight games and are 1 for 24 on the power play.I love the way were playing, were giving ourselves a chance to win by being there at the end, Anderson said. The positive out of not scoring right now is that even though guys might be showing some frustration, theyre still doing their jobs on the defensive side of the puck which is allowing us to get points and give ourselves an opportunity to be in each game.Despite their hectic schedule of late, the Wild controlled much of the action with Ottawa looking disorganized for most of the night. We had all kinds of scoring chances, but we just cant find the back of the net, Senators coach Guy Boucher said. Its a matter of creating the same chances and then having some go in and youre able to relax and not grip the stick so tight.Turris finally got Ottawa on the board when he beat Kuemper far stick-side with a wrist shot.Bouchers decision to dress seven defenseman worked out when Marc Methot left after the first period with a lower-body injury and did not return. Boucher said after the game that Ottawa knew Methot was dealing with an issue, which is why the Senators used an extra defender.Suter scored late in the first and Ottawa continued to struggle in the second, leaving Anderson to keep the team in the game. He made huge saves on Nino Niederreiter and Erik Staal to keep it 1-0.The Senators had four power-play opportunities and struggled to create offense, a common refrain for the team as of late. The Wild made the Senators power play look even worse when they scored short-handed. Staal got off a shot and Suter was there for the rebound.Game notes LW Matt Puempel was a late healthy scratch for the Senators. ... Minnesota LW Zach Parise (lower body) missed his sixth straight game. C Joel Eriksson and D Nate Prosser were a healthy scratch.UP NEXTWild: Host Calgary on Tuesday night.Senators: Play at Philadelphia on Tuesday night. Bill Bates Jersey . JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Daryl Smith strolled around Jacksonvilles practice fields Wednesday without a helmet or shoulder pads.It was probably a good thing he got the day off.The Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker spent most of the joint practice with the Jaguars chatting and laughing with former teammates and coaches.I think he had so many tackles on those fields that his tackle card had been punched, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said.Indeed, Smith spent the first nine years of his NFL career in Jacksonville and left as the franchises all-time leader in tackles, with 1,089. After missing 14 games in 2012 because of a groin injury, new Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell decided not to re-sign Smith even though he wanted to end his career in Jacksonville. So Smith ended up in Baltimore, where he started every game the last three seasons (2013-15) and recorded 372 tackles and five interceptions. He landed in Tampa Bay for his 13th season and is slated to start at strong-side linebacker. You come into the league and you kind of have something in your head, said Smith, a second-round draft pick in 2004. For me, it was 10 years at first. And then once you reach a goal, you set a new goal. It really has flown by. Im still loving and enjoying the game. But I know you cant do it forever. Im just trying to soak up everything you can.He had plenty of time Wednesday to soak up his first trip to Jacksonville in nearly 4 1/2 years. He hugged former teammate Paul Posluszny, visited with Jaguars strength and conditioning coordinator Tom Myslinski, had a lengthy conversation with former teammate and current Jaguars scout Greg Jones and even spoke with Jaguars coach Gus Bradley during a break. Smith also was popular with autograph-seeking fans after practice. One of the best guys and one of the best football players Ive ever been around, Posluszny said. I wish I could have played with him more because you love to be around those type of guys.ddddddddddddSmith wasnt the only one making a return to his former stomping grounds. The Jaguars drafted two current Bucs: punter Bryan Anger in 2012 and running back Storm Johnson in 2014. Tampa Bays coaches have even more ties to Jacksonville. Koetter was the Jaguars offensive coordinator for five years (2007-11). Bucs offensive coordinator Todd Monken spent four years (2007-10) in Jacksonville. Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith held the same position in Jacksonville for five years (2003-07).Throw in linebackers coach Mark Duffner (2006-13 in Jacksonville), special teams coordinator Nate Kaczor (2008-11) and assistant defensive line coach Paul Spicer (2000-08 in Jacksonville as a player), and Tampa Bays coaching staff shouldnt have had problems getting around Jacksonville.Koetter still has a home in the area.Id be glad to sell it, Koetter said.Daryl Smith has no regrets about his near decade with the Jags. He was a defensive mainstay for Jacksonville, teaming with fellow linebacker Mike Peterson and giving the Jaguars one of the best tandems in the league. Had it not been for that groin injury that cost him all but the final two games of the 2012 season, he might be finishing his career in Jacksonville.Things always work out the way theyre supposed to, Smith said. I didnt want to leave in the first place, but at the same time, I guess it had to happen. I learned a lot since Ive been gone and theyve been getting better and better every year. Thats just the way its supposed to be.I cant never look back and say I wish this didnt happen or whatever. The past is the past. You just learn from it and you move on.
