SAN DIEGO -- Domonic Brown made the most of the only fastball he saw all night from Jason Marquis. Brown hit his 20th home run and tied a career high with four RBIs, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the San Diego Padres 6-2 Tuesday night. "I was looking changeup," said Brown, "It was the only fastball I had seen from him in three at-bats. So I was just trying hit something in the middle the other way and I just reacted to the ball. "I just wanted to keep the swing short and quick and made that adjustment." Marquis (9-3), who had won eight straight decisions over his last 11 starts, went 4 1-3 innings, giving up six runs on six hits, walking five and striking out four to take the loss. "It was a fastball, up and out over the plate," Marquis said of the pitch Brown hit out. "Its 2-0 -- a hitters count -- and he put the barrel on the ball." He allowed back-to-back walks on eight pitches to Ryan Howard and Brown in the fifth inning, which led to Marquis exit from the game and contributed to three more runs by the Phillies, who took their 6-2 lead. Philadelphia parlayed singles by Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley along with three walks, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly by John Mayberry Jr. for the three runs. Marquis, who hadnt lost a game since April 22 against Milwaukee, leads the majors in walks with 53. He has had four or more walks in 11 of his 16 starts. The Padres have lost five of eight since a season-high seven-game win streak. Kyle Kendrick (7-4) went eight innings for Philadelphia, allowing two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts and no walks to pick up the victory. "Its always nice to pitch eight innings," said Kendrick. "That was a good win for us. I was throwing my cutter a lot more than usual tonight. That home run by Brown was big particularly after we gave up two and to come back and take the lead." Brown, who walked with the bases-loaded in the fifth to drive in a run, had hit a three-run homer off Marquis in the third for a 3-2 lead. Rollins walked to lead off the third and stole second. He went to third on a one-out single by Michael Young. Marquis struck out Howard, but Brown hit a 2-0 pitch 411 feet into the right-centre field stands. He is second in the NL in homers, one behind Carlos Gonzalez. It was his first homer since June 8, a span of 56 at-bats. He has 54 RBIs. The Padres had taken a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Kyle Blanks singled to right and Yasmani Grandal doubled to left. Alexi Amaristas infield grounder to second scored Blanks, and Pedro Ciriacos single to left scored Grandal. The Padres threatened in the ninth on Grandals single and Ciriacos third hit of the game, a double. But reliever Antonio Bastardo struck out Logan Forsythe for the final out. NOTES: Padres LHP Robbie Erlin (1-0, 4.15 ERA) will be called up from Triple-A Tucson on Wednesday and will make his second major league start against Philadelphia. However, Black said he will likely not stay there even if he heats up. "We were hoping a different look would give him a different perspective on the game. I dont think it had anything to do with him getting two hits (on Monday).". Phillies 1B Ryan Howard returned to the starting lineup after sitting out Mondays game with a sore left knee. Howard was batting .432 over his last 12 games with three home runs and 11 RBIs. . Team GBs women came to Rio with medal aspirations but return home having finished fourth in the sevens at the 2016 Olympics. It wasnt for a lack of heart but at key moments their discipline was found wanting as they fell in the bronze medal match to Canada. For so long it looked like Team GB were going to be genuine contenders to make the final. They breezed through their group with three wins from three -- including a 22-0 triumph over Canada -- then made light work of Fiji in the quarterfinals only to run into the Portia Woodman-inspired New Zealand.Reduced to five players at half-time with Katy McLean shown yellow for pulling back the Woodman as she attempted to sprint clear and Amy Wilson Hardy then sin-binned, perhaps harshly, for catching Ruby Tui in the air it just gave them too much to do. In the end the Woodman-inspired Black Ferns cutting edge proved too much as they closed out a 25-7 triumph. Then Canada shut them out 33-10 in the bronze medal match - captain Emily Scarratt was sin-binned for a knock on - to leave the squad devastated. It wasnt in the script. With a host of World Cup-winners in their ranks, they would have fancied their chances of taking away gold -- that was certainly the pre-Games message from coach Simon Middleton. But in the end theyll be left pondering those horrible what ifs.We couldnt really live with the pace, and we hurt ourselves with a few of the things that we did, Middleton said. There are a lot of young players in there, and hopefully we will get another shot at the Olympics next time around, and we will be better for it.Looking back over the three days there are plenty of positives to take from their performances: Scarratt was imperious under the high ball, Jo Watmore, their player of the Games, played brilliantly in getting her siix tries while the experience from the tournament will put them in good stead heading forward.ddddddddddddBut will come as no immediate consolation.I just feel empty, Team GBs Heather Fisher said. We werent the best team. We set out for gold, lost to New Zealand and then had to focus on bronze and left ourselves too much to do at half-time. You dont go on the pitch to lose, you go on the pitch to give your absolute all to win. You hope that when you turn up you will do what you have worked for your whole life. New Zealand were the better team in the first game but we didnt show up against Canada.Despite their disappointment at how they fared in Rio, there are reasons for real optimism for the womens sport in Britain. The Rugby Football Union will be awarding 48 contracts with 16 full-time for the 2016-17 season with a focus on 15s with England heading to next summers World Cup as defending champions. At grassroots level, the number of women playing the game is rising year-on-year with over 18,000 currently playing the sport with a programme launched in 2014 to take the game to 100,000 new players.Wales showed signs of improvement in the previous Six Nations, had Jasmine Joyce in the GB squad and now have the hugely experienced Rowland Phillips in charge of the national 15s side. And Scottish Rugby are hoping to double the number of women and girls playing the game in their part of the world by 2020.Its all positive for the womens sport. Those who made the long trip to the Deodoro Stadium or watched it from afar wouldve seen GB play with heart, make gainline-breaking runs and create stunning tries but in the end, it was not enough for a medal.
