It would help the track and public relations director Kerry Tharp build on the retro theme that has been so popular over the last couple of years. I think a lot of traditional NASCAR fans would relish the novelty of doing things the way they might have done it back in the day, with a high noon Monday start for the Southern 500. They ran that race on Labor Day itself most years from 1950 until 1984, pushed there by South Carolinas blue laws. If you really want the full old-school Southern 500 experience, then you have to run it at noon when it is so hot that your shoes melt into the asphalt.
