LOS ANGELES -- June was a month to savour for Los Angeles Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig and one to forget for Philadelphia Phillies slumping first baseman Ryan Howard. Puig ended his sensational first month in the major leagues with his first four-hit game, Stephen Fife scattered four hits over seven scoreless innings and the Dodgers beat the Phillies 6-1 Sunday to take three of four in the series. "Puigs definitely brought an energy and a spark to us, and his skill level, I think, is a little more than anybody anticipated it would be," Fife said. "Ever since he first got here, Ive had a lot of friends and family ask me: Hey, whats it like? And I just say: Keep watching, because its going to be historic. And as its turned out, its been a pretty historic start." Puig finished June with 44 hits, surpassing the 42 by Pittsburghs Bob Elliott in September 1939 for the second-most in a players first full calendar month in the major leagues. Joe DiMaggio had 48 in May 1936. "Obviously, the league is going to start to make adjustments when they start figuring out what counts and what pitches he may struggle with or have less success with," Philadelphias Jimmy Rollins said. "And then hell have to readjust his game. But right now, hes done everything he needs to do." Puig also eclipsed the Los Angeles Dodgers record for most hits in a month by a rookie, set by Steve Sax in August 1982. The Cuban-born right fielder got his first major league triple in the fifth inning and scored on Adrian Gonzalezs double for a 4-0 lead. Puig singled his first two times up and stole second base both times. He scored the games first run in the fourth inning on a single by Hanley Ramirez. Matt Kemp and Jerry Hairston Jr. also had RBI singles that inning. The only reason Puig led off the fourth was because Fife was picked off first base by catcher Carlos Ruiz for the final out in the third. Puig also doubled in the seventh. "He appears to me to be a complete package of a top-tier ballplayer," Fife said. "And to see somebody do that in the big leagues for the four weeks hes been up now is very impressive. I think hes taken a lot of pressure off a lot of people in here, just because hes producing at such an unbelievable rate." A.J. Ellis had an RBI double among his three hits and threw out two baserunners trying to steal, helping lead the Dodgers to their eighth victory in nine games. He finished the month with a .436 average, 16 RBIs and seven home runs. Fife (3-2) had five strikeouts in his second straight win. The right-hander has a 2.21 ERA over in six starts since being inserted into the rotation on June 3. "It was a good mix of everything," Fife said. "I tried to keep the ball down in the zone and was mixing in the changeup and the curveball throughout the whole day. My fastball command kind of went erratic in the third, so I threw the changeup and that kind of got me back on line. Then things started cruising." Jose Dominguez, promoted from Triple-A on Saturday, pitched a perfect eighth inning in his big league debut. The righty struck out his first batter, Delmon Young, on a fastball that registered 101 mph on the Dodger Stadium speed gun. Howard, back in the lineup after sitting out the previous two games because of left-handed starters, was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. He is hitless in his last 20 at-bats with 11 strikeouts. "Im not happy about it," the 2006 NL MVP said. "Obviously, you dont go out there and say: I want to go 0-for-this entire trip. Its a battle and a grind, and its a very frustrating game at times." Kyle Kendrick (7-5) gave up four runs and 10 hits in six innings. The right-hander was saved by his batting helmet in the sixth when a pitch glanced off the back of it as he tried to duck out of the way. Fife squatted on the front slope of the mound, showing concern for Kendrick before the Phillies pitcher went to first base. Pitching coach Rick Honeycutt came out to settle down Fife, who induced Michael Young to hit into a forceout and got Chase Utley to ground into an inning-ending double play. "He came up to bunt in the third inning and I sailed one over his head, which was completely unintentional. Then in the sixth, I actually hit him in the head," Fife said. "For me, there are rules in this game -- and one of them is, never hit a pitcher. So I got a little rattled. My biggest worry is that he would leave the game with a concussion. I didnt really see the blow, but I heard the noise. I probably owe him more than an apology. Its not something I intend to do ever again." Rollins drove in Philadelphias run with a two-out RBI single in the ninth. NOTES: The Dodgers designated 10-year veteran RHP Matt Guerrier for assignment and promoted rookie RHP Chris Withrow from Triple-A Albuquerque. Guerrier was 2-3 with a 4.80 ERA in 34 relief appearances. Withrow made three appearances for the big club earlier this month before he was optioned to the minors. ... Dodgers LF Carl Crawford, sidelined since June 2 because of a left hamstring strain, began a minor league rehab assignment Sunday with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga. Starting that game against Lancaster was LHP Ted Lilly, who hasnt pitched for Los Angeles since June 4 because of a neck sprain. Demarcus Robinson Jersey . Last Thursday, a federal appellate court issued another decision in NFL commissioner Roger Goodells favor and against the NFL Players Association. This time it was in Adrian Petersons case. The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals held that Goodell was properly acting within his powers when he suspended the Minnesota Vikings running back, under the domestic violence policy set in August 2014, for conduct that occurred in May 2014.Heres a Q&A breaking down what it all means:What was the case about? It starts with Article 46 of the collective bargaining agreement, which allows the NFL to hold players accountable for conduct detrimental to the integrity of, or public confidence in, the game of professional football. This empowered Goodell to create the personal conduct policy. In August 2014, following the Ray Rice controversy, Goodell circulated a memorandum to teams, outlining enhanced penalties for personal conduct policy violations involving domestic violence. These penalties increased the two-week unpaid suspension to six weeks for a first domestic violence offense. This case was about whether Goodell could retroactively apply those enhanced penalties to Peterson for the domestic violence he committed four months prior to the rules inception.?How did the events play out?Two weeks after Goodell issued the memorandum, a Texas grand jury indicted Peterson on Sept. 11, 2014. The running back was charged with felony injury to a child, his then-4-year-old son, during a May incident. In November, Peterson pleaded no contest to the lesser charge of misdemeanor reckless assault. Goodell suspended Peterson indefinitely and fined him six games pay based on the protocol outlined in the August 2014 domestic violence memorandum. An arbitrator Goodell chose affirmed Petersons penalty, but a federal lower court reversed it. The NFL appealed that decision to a higher court. What did the appellate court decide?A three-judge panel on the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with the arbitrator, holding that Goodell could apply the enhanced domestic violence penalties to Peterson.?The appellate court did not think Goodells memorandum created a new penalty that could have been applied retroactively. Rather, the appellate court concluded that the August 2014 memorandum just further explained the then-existing personal conduct policy, effectively enhancing it.The court also said Goodell may issue whatever punishment he believes is necessary under Article 46 and the personal conduct policy because neither limit the commissioners authority. In other words, the League might change its discipline without changing its policy, the court said. What does the ruling mean for the NFL?The ruling means Goodell has the power to increase or decrease punishment as he sees fit. The commissioner isnt limited to prior discipline -- i.e., Goodell doesnt have to issue the same punishment to a player that he issued in the past. Goodell has tthe power under Article 46 and the personal conduct policy to punish players to whatever extent he believes is necessary to deter the bad behavior.dddddddddddd.?Following the Deflategate decision against Tom Brady, this ruling just reaffirms the expansive reach of Goodells powers when it comes to issuing punishments under the CBA.?What does the ruling mean for Adrian Peterson? The ruling doesnt impact Petersons ability to play. It requires only that he forfeit his game checks for the six games Goodell suspended him in November 2014. Thats approximately $4.1 million of Petersons $11.75 million salary. (After Week 2 of the 2014 season, Peterson was placed on the commissioners exempt list, so although he was barred from all team activities until his child-abuse case was resolved, he still received his salary. It was after he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge that he was suspended, without pay, for the final six games of 2014.)League sources told ESPNs Ed Werder that Peterson had already paid the NFL three game checks, leaving less than $2.1 million to be paid. What does the ruling mean for the NFLPA and NFL players? The ruling is another hit to the NFLPA. The back-to-back appellate court losses could deter the NFLPA from pursuing challenges to Goodells authority in the future.?With this 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals decision, coupled with the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals Deflategate decision, the precedent has been set that Goodell has broad authority under Article 46. The decisions give the NFLPA little room to raise a viable argument undermining that authority. That does not mean there wont be more discipline fights; in a different case, with different facts, the NFLPA might find it worthwhile to raise a challenge. Its the associations duty to defend the leagues players. ?How can the NFLPA change the breadth of Goodells authority??The NFLPA can limit Goodells powers in Article 46 only by negotiating new terms in the CBA.?The CBA can be renegotiated at the end of the 2020 NFL season. That is, unless the NFL and NFLPA collectively agree to change the CBA before that time. This is unlikely, largely because Article 46 isnt an issue that impacts a lot of NFL players. Said another way, relatively few NFL players commit personal conduct policy violations. And fewer are getting into trouble, period. As the Washington Post reported last week, there has been a 40 percent drop in the number of NFL player arrested in the first six months of this year as compared to the same period last year. That means the NFLPA might not make it a priority to negotiate a change in Goodells powers under Article 46 now and possibly in the future.?Adrienne Lawrence is a legal analyst who practiced law from 2008 to 2015 before joining ESPN in August 2015.?Follow her on Twitter @AdrienneESPN.
