Hockey Canada is making changes to reclaim its spot atop the international game, as the national governing body has parted ways with head scout Kevin Prendergast and goaltending consultant Ron Tugnutt. "Those are not easy things to do, but we have to do it," Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson told delegates in their annual general meeting Friday morning in Charlottetown. "Were not panicking, but we do have the red light on saying, hey, we have to get better." Prendergast was head scout of Hockey Canadas Program of Excellence and was responsible for all player evaluation and recruitment for Canadas National Junior and Under-18 development and selection camps, as well as for evaluations with the Under-17 program. Canada has not won gold at the World Junior Hockey Championship since 2009 and placed fourth this past year in Russia. According to Nicholson, Hockey Canada is also looking at making changes to youth programs going as far back as the Under-15. It may also change its Under-17 program to send three teams to the world challenge instead of five. "Were looking at a model of bringing in players to camp and then selecting teams to go instead of regions," said Nicholson. Tugnutt, who played 17 seasons in the NHL, scouted for Canadas national mens teams and worked with Hockey Canadas development department to develop and improve resources for goaltenders and goaltending coaches.
