Its not often that Indiana plays a true road game in its non-conference schedule. Like most Top 25 powers, its going to play a lot of home games, or its going to play on a neutral floor when it does travel. So, when the No. 6 Hoosiers agreed to play Tuesday nights non-conference contest at Fort Wayne, it probably raised more than a few eyebrows. Summit League teams like the Mastodons rarely get TV league programs to venture into the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. But Indiana coach Tom Crean, while admitting his team could play in a difficult atmosphere, felt it was an opportunity that couldnt be passed up. It is the Hoosiers third of their four games in the Indiana Classic, and with the other three in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, this was one they could afford to play on the road.It was an opportunity to involve Fort Wayne and an opportunity to go on the road at the second-largest city (in Indiana), I think, and a great IU fan base up there, Crean said. Now weve got to go play the game. Its going to be easier said than done.Of course, if youre going to play a road game against the Mastodons, you might as well do it with the talent Crean has on his roster. Indiana (3-0) started the season in impressive fashion, beating Kansas, UMass Lowell and Liberty by escalating margins.Saturday nights 87-48 rout of Liberty featured a 55-20 rebounding margin against a team that started no one taller than 6-5. It also featured 60.9 percent field goal shooting, a terrific defensive showing that saw the Flames make just under 30 percent from the floor, and an unsightly 26 turnovers.Crean said after the game that the Hoosiers are simply trying to play too fast.Everythings correctible, he said. Their attitudes are great and well get those things fixed as we go. Some of our turnovers are coming from footwork. Weve got to continue to build on that.Indiana will have to value the ball a bit better against an opponent which is forcing 16 turnovers per game and scores 87.8 points. Fort Wayne (2-2) is coming off a 94-81 win Saturday night over UMass Lowell, a game that was also part of the Indiana Classic. The Mastodons will pin their upset hopes on 6-1 senior guard Mo Evans, who put up 33 points and 13 assists against UMass Lowell. Evans is averaging 23.3 points and 4.8 assists while canning 59.6 percent of his field goal attempts and 57.1 percent on 3-pointers.He has figured out how to play the position in our system, said Fort Wayne coach Jon Coffman.Three other players score in double figures for Fort Wayne, which was formerly known as IPFW (Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne) until the athletic department opted for a rebranding.By any name, it figures to have a tall order against the likes of James Blackmon (23 points), Thomas Bryant, Robert Johnson and OG Anunoby. But at least the Mastodons will get to stay at home for this opportunity.Vapormax 2020 Canada . But what about the officials? The American captain didnt waste the chance, driving the ball into the empty net in the 63rd minute for her second goal of the tournament.More to come, but here are three observations from the pivotal Group G clash.1. Two teams play to typeFrance had more chances. France had better chances. It controlled the game early. It threw everything at the Americans late. It didnt make any of it count. The United States absorbed pressure early, regrouped at halftime, then found a way to scrape together a late goal and a win in the end.It would be easy to pass off the idea of American mettle and French faltering as writing to the result -- any of a number of bounces could have flipped the score line. Except that it seems to keep happening the same way for these two teams in major tournaments. And give Lloyd credit. On a night when she (and Alex Morgan) were starved for service for such long stretches, she held her poise and was right there pushing forward when Heaths shot rebounded to her.2. Whitney Engen holds her nerveEngen was the only field player for the United States who made last years World Cup roster but didnt see time on the field in Canada. Saturday she found herself in the starting lineup foor the first time since March, a replacement for Julie Johnston at center back.ddddddddddddOne of the lower-profile battles throughout the year was that between Engen and NWSL No. 1 overall pick Emily Sonnett to be the third center back behind Johnston and Becky Sauerbrunn. Engen held off her challenger and held on to the important roster spot.U.S. Soccer said Johnston was available for the game (NBC reported she had a sore groin), but while the rest of her teammates -- including Mallory Pugh, who injured her ankle in the opening game and didnt start this one -- warmed up on the field before the game, the defender stood on the sideline with a long-sleeved shirt tied around her waist. Could Johnston have played in a pinch? Its unclear, but it didnt matter because her understudy had a quiet enough night to leave the headlines to others.3. Americans now control their fateThe game between the United States and Colombia was always going to be the undercard in Manaus on Tuesday. And not just because it will take place before host Brazil takes the field in the nightcap. But the U.S women now make the trip into the Amazon in considerably better shape than they would have been with even a draw against France. As long as the United States beats Colombia, it wins Group G and earns a place in the quarterfinals opposite a third-place team from one of the other groups. The math would have been more complicated with a draw. France is likely left to stare down the prospect of another quarterfinal against Germany, just as in the World Cup. ' ' '
