BOSTON -- If the Kansas City Royals are going to prevail in the rubber game of their three-game series against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday at Fenway Park, theyre probably going to have to figure out how to keep second baseman Dustin Pedroia off the base paths. The Red Sox leadoff man went 4-for-5 as Boston snapped a three-game losing skid with an 8-3 win against the Royals on Saturday. He has been on base in 18 straight games and has had a hit in 17 of those games. Before he grounded into a double play in the eighth inning he had a hit in 11 straight at-bats, one shy of the major-league record.Pedroia is 33-for-72 since being moved into the leadoff spot by manager John Farrell.Hes been hotter than a firecracker for sure, manager Ned Yost said Saturday after the Royals lost for just the second time in 13 games. Four-for-4 last night, 4-for-5 tonight, hes just in a real hot streak. And whats amazing to me, he keeps his bat in the zone. He can handle so many pitches. Hes just a really good hitter. Ive always thought that about him though. The Red Sox, who lead the league in runs scored, had scored seven runs during their three losses prior to Saturday when they beat hot Royals starter Danny Duffy. Now it appears theyre back on track and theyll look to keep their bats going in support of Eduardo Rodriguez, who makes his return to the rotation Sunday. We swung the bats well, Pedroia said Saturday. A lot of guys had great at-bats. What can you say? We beat a guy thats really tough. So well get to tomorrow and try to continue it.Rodriguez (2-5, 5.11 ERA) threw four no-hit innings with two walks and seven strikeouts in his last start Aug. 16 on the road against the Baltimore Orioles before he left with a hamstring injury. Rodriguez thought he would make his next start Aug. 21, but was scratched the night before. The Red Sox lost that game 10-5 to the Detroit Tigers with Henry Owens filling in as their start. Rodriguez will look for redemption against the Royals.Yeah, because I know it was partly my fault, Rodriguez told WEEI.com. I was supposed to pitch that game. I feel bad but I have to get ready for the next one.Rodriguez threw a simulate game Tuesday and a bullpen session Thursday in preparation for his next start.I was able to throw all my pitches where I wanted them, Rodriguez told the Boston Herald. It feels good. The Royals will counter with right-hander Yordano Ventura, who has been tough to hit in August. Ventura (9-9, 4.27 ERA) is 3-0 with a 2.03 ERA in six starts in August. The Royals have won all six games Ventura started this month. Its been quite a turnaround for Ventura after he went 0-4 with a 4.55 ERA in July.Alex Gordon hasnt been as hot as Pedroia but hes been a catalyst for the Royals offense. He went 1-for-4 with a double Saturday to extend his hitting streak to five games. He has at least one hit in 16 of his past 17 games, hitting .349 (22-for-63) in that span. Fake Balenciaga Cheap . Joe McDonald gives us his take on the biggest and best performances. This is where we say, Morning, Joe.The NHLs Cubs?: Lets start with baseball. Yes, Major League Baseball. The Chicago Cubs and the Cleveland Indians are even at a game each in the World Series. Theo Epstein, who is the Cubs president of baseball operations, helped the Boston Red Sox win two World Series titles, in 2004 and 2007. Now, hes given the Cubs a chance to win a championship for the first time since 1908. Whats this got to do with the NHL? Edmonton Oilers president of hockey operations and general manager Peter Chiarelli helped orchestrate a Stanley Cup championship for the Boston Bruins in 2011 and a return trip to the finals in 2013. Can he do the same for the Oilers? They havent won a Stanley Cup since 1990 and there have been some miserable seasons ever since. After losing in the Stanley Cup finals in 2006 to the Carolina Hurricanes, the Oilers have missed the playoffs every season since. Its still early, but the Oilers are off to a flying start. Led by 19-year-old captain and 2015 No. 1 overall pick Connor McDavid, the Oilers are 6-1-0 after beating the Washington Capitals 4-1 Wednesday night at Rogers Place. McDavid had two assists to take the NHL scoring lead with 11 points. Goalie Cam Talbot had another strong game and finished with 34 saves. The addition of veteran forward and Stanley Cup winner Milan Lucic has helped the Oilers on and off the ice. And the teams young stars are finally playing with experience. This could be an interesting season in Edmonton. (And Chicago.)Vesey continues to roll: Looks like rookie Jimmy Vesey made the right decision signing with the New York Rangers. The 23-year-old former college free agent scored one goal and added an assist in the Rangers 5-2 win over the Bruins on Wednesday night at Madison Square Gardeen.dddddddddddd He has four goals and one assist in his last five games and hes tied for the team lead in goals. Coach Alain Vigneault has put Vesey in a position to be successful in every situation and hes quickly gaining confidence. Vigneault said at the start of the season that talent has no age and the coach is right. Vesey has the ability to be successful in the NHL and he will help the Rangers win. Sure, he will experience the ebbs and flows as any rookie in the NHL, but it wont be long before his consistent play translates into more wins in New York.Habitually good starts: Before you get excited about the 6-0-1 start for the Montreal Canadiens, just remember how the team began 2015-16 -- and how it ended. The Canadiens started 9-0-0 last season and appeared to be strong Stanley Cup contenders with Carey Price in net. Then, in November, the world-class goalie suffered a season-ending knee injury and the Canadiens spiraled out of control, finishing sixth in the Atlantic Division and missing the playoffs. This season, the Canadiens are the only NHL team without a regulation loss. This time, however, Price isnt the only goalie who is having an impact for the Habs. On July 1, the Canadiens signed veteran goalie Al Montoya to serve as Prices backup, an important decision thats already paying dividends. On Wednesday, Montoya made 26 saves to help Montreal to a 3-2 win over the New York Islanders at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Montoya is 3-0-1 and his continued strong play will allow Price, who has won his three starts this season, an opportunity to lessen his workload and more of a chance to stay healthy this season. If thats the case, the Canadiens can finish near the top of the division standings and return to the Stanley Cup playoffs. ' ' '
