ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Broncos centre Dan Koppen is out for the season after tearing his left ACL on Sunday in 9-on-7 drills, less than six weeks after rejoining Denver following J.D. Waltons setback in his comeback from ankle surgery. Koppen, an 11-year veteran who played his first nine seasons with the Patriots, was caught in a pile early in the workout and was carted off the field and taken for an MRI, which revealed the season-ending injury. Manny Ramirez, who took most of the snaps at centre during Denvers off-season practices, stepped in for Koppen, whose teams have gone 108-28 in games he has started. Later in the day, the Broncos signed free-agent centre Steve Vallos, pending a physical. Vallos is a six-year veteran who has played in Seattle, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Jacksonville with nine career starts. "I always cringe," a sombre-sounding coach John Fox said after practice. "You never like to see players get injured, particularly severely injured. But you understand when you do this long enough, whether youre a player or a coach, that this happens. You know, you get them back ready. And youve got some guys that have worked hard off of injuries last year and it will be no different this year." Koppens injury is the latest setback to Peyton Mannings patched-up pocket of protection. Left guard Zane Beadles was the only starting lineman to come out of last season unscathed. All-Pro left tackle Ryan Clady has been limited at training camp since signing a $57.5 million contract earlier this month as he recovers from right shoulder surgery. Tackle Orlando Franklin (toe, shoulder) and guard Chris Kuper (ankle) are also coming off surgeries. Franklin has been back at practice but Kuper hasnt. With Kuper needing another operation this off-season, the Broncos signed right guard Louis Vasquez in free agency. Ramirez started 11 games at right guard last season. "We need that flexibility," Fox said. "When you pick your offensive line, not just for the season, but for game day, you have to pick them from the standpoint of having some flexibility. Youve got to have a swing guard/centre, youve got to have a swing tackle/guard, for the games." Defensive lineman Derek Wolfe also sprained an ankle and didnt return to Saturdays practice, which was the second straight workout in full pads for the Broncos. "Thats the Catch-22 any coach goes through any time of year," Fox said. "Youre getting ready for the season and you need to get into pads because youve got to get in shape and yet youre still trying to make sure youve got enough guys to battle with."Bruins Jerseys 2020 . Shami has troubled the West Indies batsmen with extra bounce, and has eight wickets at 24.62 after two Tests.Shami had been sidelined for much of 2015 by a knee injury that required surgery and left him in crutches for more than a month. He made his comeback in the Antigua Test last month, and responded by cutting through the West Indies middle order in the first innings. In the next Test at Sabina Park, he struck twice early on the fourth day before the rain arrived and stalled Indias hunt for a win.Im really happy for Shami. Coming back after 18 months is not easy, Kumble said. The way he has come back and bowled aggressively, yesterday I thought he bowled the best spell that I have seen, a fast bowler running in and right through the Test. Even today in the last session he was running and bowling at 140. That says a lot about his fitness and his motivation to come back as well.Afterr his return to full fitness, Shami was a key member of the Indian Test side, Kumble said.dddddddddddd I think he feels a lot stronger now and his rhythm has been good. The problem was with his knee which was affecting his run up. Once that was sorted and he was fit and came back... fast bowling is all about rhythm and the run up. Once he got the rhythm I think the confidence came back. Weve seen from the start of the Antigua Test to now, his confidence is far greater. Thats because he has a lot of overs under his belt. With Shami having played two Tests in two weeks, Kumble noted the need to monitor the workload of a quick bowler on the comeback trail. Hes an important cog for us. We dont want to look too far ahead. The workload is something we are aware of. The last Test in Antigua the bowlers bowled back to back, we try and take workload in training sessions with respect to what happened in the match. ' ' '
